The production of Insulin and Glucagon
In pancreas the beta-cells produce Insulin and the alpha-cells produce Glucagon.Initially both hormones are produced in several steps. In the first step they areproduced as larger “prepro-hormones” and the next step they are cleavage to “prohormones”.The last step split the “pro-hormones” to Insulin and C-peptide. Insulin isactive and can directly connect with the Insulin cell receptor on the cells in order forthe cells to take in Glucose from the blood stream. However, Insulin is destroyed inthe liver and the half-life is only 5 minutes and C-peptide has a half life about 30minutes. The half-life of Glucagon is 3-6 minutes.
